In his stage-like arranged paintings the Düsseldorf painter David Czupryn condenses art historical references, elements of pop culture and hybrid fantasy creatures into complex compositions. Despite their richness of content and form, the artist succeeds in merging the many details of his works in such a painterly manner that they appear balanced. As a result, one is not deterred by the flood of information and impressions, but rather willingly scans the depicted with the eye in order to grasp the individual elements as on a screen. Here, the artist’s interest in the painterly reproduction of different materialities is particularly striking. Czupryn paints wood grains, marble surfaces, metal tubes or neon tubes with technical precision. The Duisburg-born artist combines natural materials worked by man with synthetic materials of this kind. The works subtly ask how we are influenced by our surroundings, how we ourselves influence them and what consequences digitalisation has on our perception.
